Portfolio Post: editing day 2

Today I did my second day of editing. Today I finished up with the audio and then went onto spliting everything up to where it is all going to be the places that are black boxes weithout text are eventually going to be replaced with the flashback scenes when I film them.

My project is loooking to be about 1 minute 30 seconds which i think is pretty good. I am overall pretty happy with how it is looking.

Portfolio Post: recording audio

Today I was able to capture my audio that I plan on using in my project. The sound I will be using mainly is a punching bag noise as that is going to be present through the entire opening even when it doesn’t match up with the scene being played.

There was difficulty capturing the audio as anytime I hit the bag the chains connecting it would overpower the sound of the hit. The way I got around this was through having my mother hold the bag still as I hit it so the chains wouldn’t move but I’d still be able to capture the audio so huge thanks to her.

Portfolio Post: Group meeting #2

today we had a second group meeting with new people to see how other groups are doing and get feedback on what Ive done. A very common thing was alot of people had either not started filming yet or completely finished filming not many people had done what I have done and only have it half filmed.
The group all agreed that my idea was good and what ive done was good but as ive said in ealier blogpost those flashback scenes are going to be pretty diffcult. My group liked all my mice-en-scene elements and they liked the audio design. Really the only critique i got was about the flashback scenes.

Portfolio post: recoding day 1

Today I started with recording my project. The things I have gotten down today was get the major part of the project down and the audio pieces. The image below is a bts shot of me filming today. I had my parents assist me as camera people so big thanks to them.

The image above is a screenshot of the bts of what I recorded today. the things recording consist of everything that wasnt the flashback scenes. So all the training my character does in the opening was shot today.

Portfolio Post: setting up

This post is going to be about me setting up for my first da of filming.

I started by unpacking the punching bag that I will be revolving my opening around. This one comes unfilled so I will have to fill it myself for it to work.

I than decided to fill it up with towels. towels provide a good inside as enough of them make it took real but wont make it too hard to hit. I considered filling it up with sand or clothes but I found towels to be the best as they are big so they fill space nicely while also being softer to hit.

finally I had to pick a place to hang it. Since I am unable to hang it in the roof I figured hanging it on this bar would be my best option. This bar is tall enough where the bag can hang confortable and I will still be able to do what I need to. The only other thing I need to do now is move the bar into a more open area to make it easier to record which I will be doing on recording day as I dont want to move it in the way of my parents garage just yet.

Portfolio Post: How to create specific effect

So for my project I need to be able to create the effect of a flashback. Obviously I dont know how to do that yet but this blog I’m going to be going over how other movies use them and how these movies integrate the flashbacks to look natural and not forced.
First lets define what a flashback is. A flashback is "sequence in a film takes the audience back in time to events that have already taken place." -
https://filmstro.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-creating-flashback-sequences/.  For a flashback scene I have a few options of techniques I can use. Option one is decrease shutter speed. decreasng the speed to below 180 allows the image to havr a more blurred effect. The next thing I can do is color tint. color tint is where you slightly tint the color of the film to distingush the two time periods. the final technique I could use is Diffused glow. This allows the scene to look more ethereal making it easier to tell that you are seeing a scne from the past rather than current time.

The article I used for research went over some more techniques but those are the 3 that I find the most valuable to my film opening. Final takeaway from my research is making a flashback scene can be easy as long as you get the important techniques down than you can end up making a pretty convincing looking flashback.

Portfolio post: Production Logo

In this post I’m going to be showing the process of making the logo of the production company that is “creating” this film opening.

I started with creating the outline of my company.

I then created the name of this production company.

I then decided what I wanted to fill that center piece of the logo.

Finally I finalized the design to have two different looks to it as some companies do when the tone of their movie is darker.
This is the basic logo. It has a bit of color and the main image all visible color matching the name.

This logo is the one I will be using for the film opening as I feel it fits the tone of my film opening better than the one that contains all the colors.

The reason I’ve chosen to make the logo look like this is for a few reasons. The reason I’ve chosen “Aqua Studios” is because I am a swimmer and aqua stands in place of water, also it matches my radical gaming account AquaIT. And the capybara I’ve chosen is because my Minecraft skin is a capybara also I love capybaras I think they are amazing animals. The color choice is just to match the theme of water the blues are used to give the idea that aqua stands for water.

Portfolio post: Props

The next thing I needed to focus on is props. Props are any object that could be interacted with onscreen.

For my props I had to go into researching what other boxing movies such as rocky and creed to see what props they use. The most common props in boxing movies. Un-surprisingly the most common prop for a boxing movie was a pair of boxing gloves.

So for my movie opening ive ordered a pair of boxing gloves and a punching bag as a prop to use to show my chracter training his skills. for my opening these are really the two props I need as far as I am aware but I am continuing research by watching more boxing films to see what other props I could add.

Some other props I have are weights like you would find in a gym to futher sell the idea that his is training hard. the weights I have are dumbells, a bench press, plates, and box jumps.

Portfolio Post: Costume design

The next thing I want to talk about is the costume design of my character. Although my character seems basic I might be able to tell a story even with such a basic concept.

In my research I found the most important thing in design a character is getting the mood correct for the costume and having the costume correctly represent the character. So some things I need to consider is how do I want my character to be interpreted based on looks and the functionality of it I dont want my charcter in pants as a boxer.

Another thing I have to work on is the make-up so in the flashback scenes how do I want to represent that he is loosing. For this luckily I have a sister who will be able to help me out with that.

For my character I want to make him similar to this as I want my character to feel like he thinks of himself too high and that he is over confident.

Portfoilio Post: Audio

Now that my idea is done I wanted to focus on what is going to be contained in the film opening. The first thing I am focusing on is the audio.

There are different types of audio that I can use but for my film opening I plan on using Diegetic audio and non-synchronous audio. Diegetic audio is when everything you here is from the world that is being watch so like a car driving by and when you hear it drive thast diegetic but montoge music is non-diegetic as that is added audio that a character would not be able to hear. Non-synchronous audio is audio that does not match up with what is being viewed on screen.

My plan is to only use diegetic audio for the opening and I want to use the sound of punching a punching bag throughout the entire film opening including during the flashback scenes. So that is when the non-synchronous audio would be takening place when during the flashback scenes we would be hearing punching noises even though that is not what we are seeing.

Portfolio post: character development

    Creating the character

The concept for my character is heavily inspired by characters like rocky and creed. So the idea I’ve come up with for my character is a former boxing champion that has lost his titles and fame is on his way back up to regain his former glory.

After I got the concept of the character down I need to get the name down as that is important to any boxer as that is the name they get announced as like Mike Tyson, I needed a name that inspired fear but also skill. The name I came up with was Frank Stone.

After the name I was than thinking about the character design and the best I could come up with is a little boring but its the stereotypical training boxer design, a sweater, boxing gloves, a pair of shorts on, and his boxing outfit is just boxing shorts and gloves.

This is my idea for the my character that is followed in my film opening, he is a little stereotypical but that is sort of the point I want him to feel familiar while also being unique.

Portfolio Post: Media theory

For this blog post I wanted to talk about a media theory I want to try to incorporate into my film opening. The media theory I want to try to incorporate is active audience theory by Stuart Hall.

Active audience thoery argues that "media audiences do not recieve information passively but are actively involved," - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_audience_theory. Essentially audiences make sense of whaty they are seeing through personal experience and do not always see the exact intended message that the creator had in mind. I want to achieve this as I want my film opening to be interpreted in more ways than just what I have in mind it doesn't just have to be one way.

I imagine having people see my project and being able to think of it in a different way than I intended is a good thing it means I managed to make a story that can be interpreted in different ways by people with different experiences. So even though I have a specific idea in mind that makes perfect sense to me if someone else comes up with a different idea of what the purpose is than I successfully managed to incorporate active audience theory.

Portfolio Post: Idea and inspiration

My idea of my portfolio project is a boxing movie opening. With intense focus on the main character training in the opening and voice overs of the past of his last fight establishing why this character is training so hard. The film will have focus on the punching bag rather than the character as the character is established through the inserts of the flashbacks.

My biggest inspiration for this is the Rocky Series and the Creed films. But in a way I’m taking ideas from many sports-drama films. The idea of Rocky was always interesting to me and I really enjoy the films so when this project was announced the first thing I thought of was a Rocky type boxing film and how would I want to do a a film opened for a film like Rocky. Then I was reminded that Creed was a newer version of Rocky.

I also decided though that I should look at other sports-drama movies to get an idea of what makes them successful so the films I thought of were Coach Carter, F1, and The Blind side, as these were all films I have seen and enjoyed. Most of them do the same thing, they establish the main character without really establishing him like in F1 we do see the main character and get a glimpse of what he is like but we don’t really know the main character all we see really is him racing and also acting like he is better than others.

Portfolio Post: Group meeting

Last class we were asigned into groups with other people in the class to go over our ideas and get some contructive critism and how to possible improve our projects.
The first person in my group went over her idea and her idea was some sort of drama type movie where these 2 sisters used to be super close and than drifted apart. The only major problem I had was visualizing how she was going to be able to tell that within the 2 minute time limit we have but otherwise I thought her idea was very good. The next person to go in my group had the idea of a comedy-racing moive like fast&furious but as a comedy. His pitch was very good only thing I commented on was that his acting had to be pretty good to give the correct tone of the opening.
I was the next person to go in the group and these were the following things I was told to help. "make sure the setting is done correctly otherwise film may look off," "maybe add another person just so the project doesn't feel so alone." These comments have made me rethink my project on how I can improve it and I will attempt my best to incorparte these into the final project.

These meetings I think were useful as they allowed me to rethink about my idea and allowed others to hear my idea and give me honest thoughts.

Portfolio Post: Credit Sequences

In this blog post I will be analyzing credit sequences of some sports-drama films so I can get an idea of how to incorparate them into my film opening. The films I will be looking at the films Rocky, Creed, and F1.

    Rocky:

The credit sequence for this film is incorporated into the opening as text that appears on the screen as Rocky is walking back to his house. They are used to just list the main credits that need to be listed while not interrupting the story of the film, so they just have the credits fade onto screen in "dead space."

    Creed:

Creed takes a differenct approach to the opening credit sequences as this film only gives opening credits to the production companys that produced the film and then takes you straight into the film. This film saves majority of its credits until the end of the film with all the credits.

       F1:

The credit sequence for this film happens after the opening scene. about 10 minutes into the film after the opening scene the credits play in a very similar way to Rockys credit sequence. As we are watching the action in the film the credits are used to fill some "dead space" on the screen as to not take away from the film whilst also giving the proper credits in the begining of the film.
